Potential terror attacks have been planned in three US states on Monday, the day before Americans are set to cast their votes for the next President, CBS News reports.

Citing unnamed officials, the report said that attacks may be planned by al-Qaida to take place in Texas, New York, and Virginia. However, no specific targets were named.

The officials stressed that intelligence is still being gathered and they are assessing the credibility of the threats. The threats are being treated in a serious manner out of an abundance of caution, said CBS.

“The counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States," a senior FBI official told CBS. "The FBI, working with our federal, state and local counterparts, shares and assesses intelligence on a daily basis and will continue to work closely with law enforcement and intelligence community partners to identify and disrupt any potential threat to public safety.”

The US usually sees an increase in possible alerts to terror activities close to major events and holidays.

Authorities are also stepping up security, preparing for possible civil disturbances and cyber attacks targeting voting systems.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, as well as the State Department have warned that anti-Muslim rhetoric on the US campaign trail is "fodder" for extremist propaganda.

Trump has made several incendiary remarks regarding Islam and Muslims while on the campaign trail, going so far as to propose "a total and complete shutdown on Muslims entering the United States."
